Goldwind to Supply 242MW for South Africa

Key Figures & Findings: Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind has secured a 242MW turbine supply deal for Red Rocket’s Overberg Wind Farm in South Africa. The project, located in Swellendam, Western Cape, will feature 39 units of Goldwind’s 6.2MW medium-speed permanent magnet (MSPM) turbines. Red Rocket, an independent power producer (IPP), has already reached financial close on the first phase, with Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) acquiring the first 230MW of the total 380MW capacity.

Statistics & Insights: The wind farm will generate 750GWh of clean energy annually, supplying RBM under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Once fully operational in early 2027, it will become South Africa’s largest privately developed single wind farm.

Future Implications: The project could significantly enhance South Africa’s energy mix, reducing dependence on coal and supporting renewable energy targets. Its large-scale private sector backing may pave the way for more corporate PPAs, encouraging industrial users to shift toward clean energy.
