HACO, NCBA, Ofgen Expand Solar Scaleup
Key Figures & Findings: Kenya’s HACO Industries has commissioned the second phase of its solar installation to power its Home and Personal Care (HPC) production line, cutting energy costs and reducing emissions. The project, supported by NCBA Bank through green financing, features 311 new solar panels installed by renewable energy firm Ofgen, bringing HACO’s total installed solar capacity to 420kWh. The new system offsets 60% of the HPC division’s energy demand, building on HACO’s earlier 240kWh solar plant for its plastics facility. HACO’s Managing Director, Mary-Ann Musangi, emphasized the company’s commitment to embedding sustainability at the core of its operations.
Insights: The solar upgrade delivers 180 kWh from 311 panels. The bank-backed partnership also demonstrated zero safety incidents during execution and sets a benchmark for clean energy deployment in East Africa’s manufacturing sector.
Future Implications: If replicated by other industrial players, such clean energy transitions could reduce national grid pressure and improve Kenya’s industrial sustainability index by 2027. HACO’s model may attract further climate financing into Kenya’s consumer goods sector and catalyze public-private green partnerships.
