Hydrobox Expands Mini-Grids in Kenya

Key Figures & Findings: Hydrobox, a Kenyan mini-grid developer, is expanding its run-of-river mini-grid network in Central Kenya through support from EEP Africa, a financing facility backed by the Nordic Development Fund, Finland, and Austria. This expansion leverages the Anchor-Business-Community (ABC) model to enhance rural energy access and financial sustainability. In February 2025, a joint site visit with EEP Africa was conducted in Murang’a County to assess the integration of the new Chiki mini-grid with the existing Mathioya Grid. Hydrobox, known for deploying modular hydropower solutions in East Africa, has been a key player in bridging Kenya’s rural energy gap.

Statistics & Insights: During the visit, the team verified the Gitugu hydro plant’s output of 533 kW hydro and 50 kW solar, examined distribution lines to local anchor clients, and evaluated the proposed Chiki site.

Future Implications: If successfully implemented by 2026, the initiative could strengthen supply reliability and attract new commercial clients to off-grid systems, accelerating clean energy adoption in rural Kenya.
