JA Solar Secures 220 MW South Africa Deal

Key Figures & Findings: JA Solar has entered into formal supply agreements with JUWI Renewable Energies to deliver nearly 420,000 solar modules for two utility-scale projects in South Africa, totaling 220 MW. The deals include the 120 MW Paarde Valley PV2 project—backed by TotalEnergies, Mulilo, and Reatile Group to serve Sasol and Air Liquide—and the 100 MW Sonvanger plant, developed with Pele Green Energy for Glencore. These projects are part of JUWI’s broader construction pipeline in the region, which reflects a combined capital commitment of over ZAR 6 billion (USD 338 million). Richard Doyle, Managing Director of JUWI South Africa, noted that large-scale deployments of this nature are critical for decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries and relieving pressure on the national grid as coal exits the energy mix

Insights: Both projects are scheduled for completion in late 2026, aligning with South Africa’s 2030 renewable energy targets and the retirement of 11 GW in coal capacity.

Future Implications: If project delivery remains on track, both solar farms could start offsetting carbon emissions by Q1 2027 and potentially influence procurement models for future industrial energy buyers. This may further accelerate the shift from public procurement toward private-sector-led renewable energy deals in South Africa.
