Jinko, Oyo Deliver Hybrid Power

Key Figures & Findings: Jinko ESS, a subsidiary of Chinese solar giant JinkoSolar and a global leader in energy storage, has commissioned a hybrid power system in Oyo State, Nigeria, pairing a 1MWp solar PV plant with a 1.08MWh air-cooled battery storage system. The installation supports the state’s broader 11MW hybrid initiative under the “Light-Up Oyo” campaign, aimed at improving energy access and reducing emissions. The project is owned by Nigerian firm Elektron and implemented by Royal Power and Energy Limited, a local EPC contractor. The hybrid system, which integrates a gas turbine, is designed to stabilize the electricity supply for government buildings and public infrastructure across a 10km radius.

Statistics & Insights: The Oyo system adds 1MWp of solar and 1.08MWh of storage capacity. It powers lighting and public facilities across ten kilometers in Ibadan’s central district.

Future Implications: If successful, the hybrid design could inform similar public-private energy partnerships across Nigerian states by 2026. The initiative would also support national goals of grid decentralization and emissions reduction.
