Juwi Launches $320M Solar Projects in SA

Key Figures & Findings: Juwi Renewable Energies, a subsidiary of the Juwi Group, has commenced construction on three large-scale private solar projects in South Africa with a combined capacity of 340MW. These projects aim to provide clean energy to key players in the mining, data center, and energy sectors, including Teraco Data Centres, Sasol, Air Liquide, and Glencore Mine. Representing a ZAR 6 billion ($320 million) investment, the projects are to generate over 1,000GWh annually—enough to power 200,000 households—and offset nearly one million tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
Statistics & Insights: The three facilities include a 120MW plant for Teraco Data Centres, another 120MW plant for Sasol and Air Liquide in partnership with TotalEnergies and Mulilo, and a 100MW plant for Glencore Mine in partnership with Pele Green Energy. Together, these projects will contribute 5% to South Africa’s total solar PV capacity.
Future Implications: These projects align with South Africa’s goal of adding 26GW of renewable energy under its Integrated Resource Plan. If successful, Juwi’s initiatives could significantly bolster energy resilience, reduce dependence on coal, and position the private sector as a resourceful contributor to the country’s clean energy transition.
