Kano, Morocco Seal 2GW Solar Pact

Key Figures & Findings: Kano State has inked a high-stakes partnership with Morocco to boost renewable energy generation and agribusiness capacity. Led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the delegation met with key Moroccan stakeholders, including MASEN—the agency behind Africa’s largest solar plant in Ouarzazate—and OCP Africa, a global fertilizer giant, and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development,. The visit resulted in multiple MoUs focused on energy infrastructure, clean tech transfer, and modern agriculture. MASEN committed to supporting Kano’s “Light-Up” initiative with technical assistance, investor matchmaking, and grid-scale solar deployment strategies. Meanwhile, OCP pledged support for localized fertilizer production and smart agriculture in Kano, targeting smallholder farmers.

Statistics & Insights: The agreement targets developing 2GW of solar capacity in Kano over the next five years. Morocco’s involvement—anchored by MASEN’s experience with its 500 MW Noor Solar Complex—adds strategic weight. Additionally, the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce expressed interest in channeling up to USD 10 billion into Kano’s energy and mining sectors.

Future Implications: If milestones are met, Kano could become Northern Nigeria’s first sub-national solar power hub by 2029, providing energy security to industry clusters and off-grid communities.
