KenGen Seeks Bidders for Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), a state-owned utility and major player in East Africa’s energy landscape, has launched a significant pre-qualification process for its Seven Forks Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Project. This plan, situated near the Kamburu Dam in Embu County, aims to enhance Kenya’s renewable energy production. The project will be financed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), showcasing growing international confidence in Kenya’s sustainable energy agenda. The scope covers the construction of a 42.5 MWac solar PV power plant, integrated with a 3 MW / 4.5 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a high-voltage substation, and a 132 kV transmission line. KenGen, responsible for nearly 80% of Kenya’s electricity generation, has consistently maintained a focus on clean energy solutions and operational resilience.
Statistics & Insights: KenGen plans to pre-qualify up to seven firms for the Design and Build contract, with applications due by 29 July 2025 at 10:00 a.m. East Africa Time. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum average annual turnover of USD 100 million over the past three years and have access to at least USD 13 million in liquid financial resources.
Future Implications: If successfully executed, this project could reinforce Kenya’s ambitions to achieve net-zero emissions targets by 2030 and diversify its energy mix. It may also lay the groundwork for future large-scale solar and battery storage initiatives in Kenya, potentially commencing by late 2026
