Kenya, KenGen Launches Solar Kits

Key Figures & Findings: The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen Kenya), the largest power producer in Kenya, is set to begin local manufacturing of solar power kits following recent approval from the Public-Private Partnership Directorate. The new facility will be located at Olkaria and initially focus on assembling photovoltaic modules before expanding into inverters and battery storage. With the growing demand for affordable off-grid power, KenGen aims to serve both household and commercial customers while diversifying beyond its traditional utility model. The initiative marks a strategic shift as the company taps into rising solar demand and looks to counter heavy Chinese imports in East Africa.
Statistics & Insights: KenGen Captive solar already provides 47.2% of Kenya’s self-generated capacity, totaling 574.6 MW, while KenGen also expects $32.05 million in carbon credit revenue.
Future Implications: If operations commence as planned in 2025, the solar manufacturing plant could enable KenGen to expand across Tanzania, Eswatini, and Ethiopia by 2026, thereby supporting Kenya’s energy independence and reducing import dependency. It may also accelerate the firm’s climate-aligned growth strategy and income diversification.
