Koeberg Nuclear Adds 930MW to Grid

Key Figures & Findings:
Eskom has successfully synchronized Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to South Africa’s national grid, adding 930MW to the energy mix. This milestone follows a comprehensive Long-Term Operation (LTO) programme aimed at extending the unit’s lifespan by 20 years. Maintenance efforts included replacing three steam generators, conducting thorough inspections, and refueling activities. Combined with Unit 1, which was synchronized in late 2023, Koeberg now delivers 1,860MW, about 5% of the country’s electricity.
Statistics & Insights:
Unit 2’s 930MW capacity forms part of Eskom’s strategy to expand total capacity by 2,500MW by March 2025. Unit 1, whose operational license has been extended to 2044, contributes an additional 930MW. Together, these reactors stabilize the grid and support South Africa’s shift to cleaner energy.
Future Implications:
Pending a 2025 decision by the National Nuclear Regulator, Unit 2’s extended operation could secure reliable baseload electricity as South Africa phases out coal-fired plants by 2030. The reliance on nuclear energy aligns with national climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing stable power for residential and industrial users.
