Lesotho-South Africa Water Maintenance Collaboration
Key Figures & Findings: The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) maintenance operations, led by South Africa’s Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) and Lesotho’s Highlands Development Authority (LHDA), are progressing smoothly after the tunnel system's closure on October 1, 2024. Deputy Ministers David Mahlobo and Sello Seitlholo praised the ongoing transboundary cooperation during an inspection at the tunnel in Clarens, Free State.
Statistics & Insights: The system delivers water to Free State, Northern Cape, North West, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga, benefiting 13 million residents. Maintenance efforts extend the lifespan of the infrastructure by 20 years, supporting domestic and industrial needs.
Future Implications: With enhanced collaboration and regular reviews, the LHWP could sustain regional water security and renewable energy integration, ensuring environmental and economic benefits. This model of cooperation could inspire other resource-sharing initiatives globally.
