Liberia Secures Spot in“Mission 300” Power Plan

Key Figures & Findings: Liberia has been selected as one of 15 African nations to benefit from Mission 300, a joint initiative by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to expand electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.  The program focuses on expanding energy access through renewable energy investments, infrastructure development, and sector reforms. Liberia joins Sierra Leone, Togo, and Chad in West and Central Africa as beneficiaries. Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan confirmed that President Joseph Boakai, alongside key energy stakeholders, will present Liberia’s energy compact at a high-level summit in Tanzania in February 2025 to secure further investment.

Statistics & Insights: Liberia’s electricity access rate currently stands at 33%, with an ambitious government target of 80–95% by 2030. The nation is also exploring investments in the St. Paul River hydropower plant to expand its clean energy capacity further.

Future Implications: If Mission 300 is successfully implemented, Liberia could significantly cut electricity costs, reduce dependence on expensive fuel imports, and drive industrial growth.
