Malawi’s Golomoti Solar Secures New Investor

Key Figures & Findings:
InfraCo Africa is selling its 25% stake in Golomoti JCM Solar Corporation to Old Mutual Infrastructure Investment Trust Fund (Malawi), part of Old Mutual Investment Group’s Alternative Investments division. The 20MW solar plant, located in Dedza District, Malawi, includes a 5MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the first grid-connected solar BESS in sub-Saharan Africa. The deal is expected to reduce currency exchange risks while attracting new investments in Malawi’s renewable energy sector.
Statistics & Insights:
The plant, commissioned in 2022, supplies renewable energy to Malawi’s national grid, while a corporate social responsibility program has provided safe drinking water to 2,000 people and supported local agriculture, health, and education initiatives.
Future Implications:
Old Mutual Malawi’s entry into renewable infrastructure could encourage more local participation in sustainable projects, boosting Malawi’s long-term energy security. The deal is set to finalize in August 2025.
