Manicaland Secures $600M for Energy Expansion

Key Figures & Findings: Manicaland, Zimbabwe, is set for a major energy expansion with a $600 million investment from Ilinge Energy Automation (South Africa) to develop a 400MW solar farm in Chimanimani. This project will be the largest solar development in the province, aimed at addressing chronic power shortages. Meanwhile, VS Hydro has proposed 37MW in mini-hydro projects across the province. The province, currently producing only 46MW against a daily demand of 120MW, seeks to close the energy gap and transition to self-sufficiency. Economic Development Director Munyaradzi Rubaya, highlighted the strategic importance of these deals, noting their potential to boost industrialization and GDP growth.
Statistics & Insights: The solar farm will start with a feasibility-tested 20-hectare site and gradually expand. And then VS Hydro’s mini-hydro projects include Gairezi (18MW), Nyangombe (5MW), Pungwe (9MW), and Odzani (1MW). Manicaland's energy demand is forecasted to grow to 200MW by 2028, driven by new industrial and residential developments.
Future Implications: If executed as planned, these projects could eliminate Manicaland’s energy deficit within five years, reducing reliance on grid power and enabling electricity exports. Continued investor engagement and regulatory support will be crucial for full implementation.
