Mauritania Secures Major Green Hydrogen Deal

Key Figures & Findings: Mauritania has partnered with GreenGo Energy to develop the Megaton Moon project, a large-scale green hydrogen initiative near Nouakchott. Energy Minister Mohamed Khaled and GreenGo Energy CEO Karsten Nielsen signed the agreement, which covers a 100,000-hectare site. The project, set to roll out between 2029 and 2033, will include 6 GW of electrolysis, 6.8 GW of wind power, and 6.3 GWp of solar energy.
Statistics & Insights: The first phase, projected for completion by 2029, will feature 500 MW of electrolysis, 600 MW of wind energy, and 600 MWp of solar power, producing 339,000 tonnes of green ammonia each year. Mauritania’s coastal location enables cost-effective desalination and export capabilities, thereby lowering operational costs.
Future Implications: Mauritania’s green hydrogen push could diversify its economy, reducing reliance on mining, which currently contributes 22% of GDP but only 1% of jobs
