Morocco Expands Rural Electrification Drive
Key Figures & Findings: Morocco’s rural electrification initiative, spearheaded by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), has achieved a remarkable 99.89% coverage as of mid-2024, compared to just 18% in 1995. The Comprehensive Rural Electrification Programme (PERG), launched in 1996, has electrified over 41,922 villages and connected 2.16 million households with a total investment of 25.3 billion dirhams ($2.5 billion). This initiative has also leveraged solar technology, distributing over 70,000 solar kits to remote regions between 1998 and 2018.
Statistics & Insights: In 2023, the program extended electricity to 198 additional villages, impacting 24,000 residents. Infrastructure advancements include 51,000 km of medium-voltage lines and over 136,600 km of low-voltage lines. Schools, health centers, and mosques across rural areas were also prioritized, improving living standards and service access.
Future Implications: By 2025, Morocco could expand its focus on integrating renewable energy into its electrification efforts, aligning with national goals of sustainability and reducing reliance on conventional power sources.
