Mozambique Advances 400MW Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Mozambique has completed the feasibility and environmental assessments for a 400 MW solar plant in Tete province, a project to be developed under Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric (HCB), one of southern Africa’s largest power producers. President Daniel Chapo confirmed the milestone during a visit to the Cahora Bassa Dam, joined by World Bank representatives, marking a critical step toward diversifying the country’s energy portfolio. HCB, which supplies power to Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, is expected to oversee the project’s implementation.

Statistics & Insights: The project will move into its bidding phase and, once complete, will significantly expand HCB’s generation capacity. Mozambique targets 62% renewable electricity generation by 2030.

Future Implications: Construction could begin following the bidding process, with the plant expected to bolster national and regional supply security by 2028. The project may also lay the groundwork for future wind energy investments.
