Mozambique, IFC, Gridworks Expand Transmission

Key Figures & Findings: The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has partnered with UK-backed Gridworks, an electricity infrastructure investor owned by British International Investment, to co-develop Phases II and III of the Chimuara–Nacala transmission project in Mozambique. The project will connect Mozambique’s central and northern regions through a 460 km transmission corridor. The initiative, in collaboration with the state utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), is also aimed at strengthening the national grid, enabling greater integration of renewable energy, and expanding access to power for both industrial and residential users.

Statistics & Insights: The second and third phases involve 400 kV and 220 kV lines spanning 460 km and include new substations at Namialo and Nacala-à-Velha. IFC will co-fund development costs and provide environmental and social compliance expertise.

Future Implications: If completed on schedule, the transmission corridor could significantly boost Mozambique’s grid reliability and unlock industrial expansion by 2027. It may also catalyse further regional investment in cross-border electricity interconnections.
