Mozambique's First Utility-Scale Wind Project

Key Figures & Findings: The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently approved a $54 million loan to advance Mozambique’s energy portfolio with the 120 MW Namaacha Wind Farm. This project is positioned to serve as the country’s first utility-scale wind power initiative, supported through a total investment of $224.5 million, drawing financing from multiple institutions, including the International Finance Corporation and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. Project developers Globeleq and Source Energia, in partnership with Mozambique’s national utility, EDM, have secured a 25-year power purchase agreement, underscoring their commitment to the country’s “Energy for All by 2030” initiative. This initiative marks Mozambique’s strategic effort to diversify its energy sources, which currently rely heavily on hydropower and natural gas.

Statistics & Insights:
The Namaacha Wind Farm is projected to generate 331.6 GWh annually, offsetting approximately 71,816 tons of CO₂ each year.

Future Implications:
This wind project could strengthen Mozambique’s energy hub in the region by increasing trade through the Southern African Power Pool. Additionally, its success may set the foundation for further renewable energy investments in Mozambique, supporting the government’s commitment to achieving universal electricity access by 2030.
