Nachtigal Dam Powers Cameroon’s Energy Grid

Key Figures & Findings: The Nachtigal Hydro-Power Company (NHPC) has connected 300 MW of electricity from the Nachtigal Dam to Cameroon’s power grid, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development. The facility's capacity has been bolstered by the activation of the fifth 60 MW unit, with plans for full commissioning by this January. NHPC, a collaboration between Electricité de France (EDF), the World Bank, and the Government of Cameroon, aims to deliver sustainable and competitive electricity, crucial for meeting the country's growing energy needs.

Statistics & Insights: The Nachtigal Dam, with a total capacity of 420 MW, represents a CFA 786 billion investment, contributing to a 30% boost in Cameroon’s electricity production capacity. Transmission infrastructure, however, remains a critical bottleneck. The government faces a CFA 10 billion monthly payment obligation to NHPC once the dam reaches full capacity, irrespective of energy utilization.

Future Implications. Successful completion of transmission lines will be essential to leverage Nachtigal’s energy production and generate full sustainable revenue.
