Namdeb, NamPower Forge Renewable Energy Deal

Key Figures & Findings: Namdeb, the leading Namibian diamond miner jointly owned by the government and De Beers Group, is stepping deeper into clean energy by signing an agreement with Namibia’s national utility, NamPower, to explore expanding a 34 MW wind facility located 45 kilometers north of Oranjemund. Under the plan, Namdeb could supply excess electricity to the national grid while advancing its own decarbonization goals. CEO Riaan Burger highlighted that this move fits within Namdeb’s long-term ambition to achieve carbon neutrality, supported by initiatives like introducing Namibia’s first battery-electric bus in 2023. Namdeb’s operations, spanning the southwest coast, have increasingly prioritized renewable integration to align with Namibia’s national energy agenda.
Statistics & Insights: The Kerbehuk Wind Facility has the potential to offset nearly half of Namdeb’s reliance on high-carbon energy sources. Meanwhile, NamPower targets securing 70% of its national energy mix from renewable sources by 2030 under its broader decarbonization strategy.
Future Implications: If the project progresses as planned, it could strengthen Namibia’s grid resilience, support industrial decarbonization, and position the mining sector as a catalyst for renewable growth by 2030. The model may also encourage deeper cooperation between private industry and national utilities across the region.
