Namibia’s Largest Solar Project Breaks Ground
Key Figures & Findings: NamPower, Namibia’s state-owned power utility, has signed contracts with two Chinese firms—China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co. Ltd and China New Energy Development (Zhejiang) Co. Ltd—to construct the country’s largest solar power plant. Valued at N$1.4 billion ($78.33 million), the project will increase Namibia’s power capacity by 500 MW. The solar plant, partly financed by the German Development Bank (KfW), aims to stabilize electricity tariffs, promote economic growth, and support environmental sustainability. NamPower, established in 1964, has long served as the nation’s energy backbone.
Statistics & Insights: The solar power plant, expected to be operational by mid-2026, will reduce Namibia’s dependency on electricity imports from Zambia and South Africa. The 500 MW capacity boost will significantly improve the country’s energy security.
Future Implications: This project is pivotal in Namibia's transition toward renewable energy, ensuring a stable supply while reducing energy costs. It also sets a benchmark for regional renewable energy collaborations between African and international stakeholders.
