Namibia Opens First Green Hydrogen Plant

Key Figures & Findings: Namibia has inaugurated its first integrated green hydrogen production and refuelling facility in Walvis Bay, officially opened by Prime Minister Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare. Developed by Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, the project features a solar-powered off-grid electrolyser, a hydrogen refuelling station, and a Hydrogen Academy for local skills training. The plant already powers dual-fuel trucks, tractors, and a hydrogen genset, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy strategy and Vision 2030 goals.
Statistics & Insights: The EU has mobilised €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) in loans and grants toward Namibia’s hydrogen sector, aiming to unlock over €20 billion ($21.5 billion) in private investment. Locally, the project has trained dozens of Namibians in hydrogen technologies through the on-site academy. Expansion plans include a hydrogen-powered locomotive by 2026 and the deployment of a dual-fuel harbour vessel in Walvis Bay in 2027.
Future Implications: If scaled as planned, Namibia could position itself as a continental hub for hydrogen logistics, maritime fuel, and industrial decarbonisation. By 2030, the sector may create thousands of jobs, deepen EU–Africa trade partnerships, and enhance Namibia’s role as a regional energy exporter.
