Narok Health Centre Taps Solar

Key Figures & Findings: The CHP Talek Health Centre in Kenya’s Narok County has undergone a solar power upgrade, with the introduction of a 15 kW solar system complemented by a 30 kWh battery, marking a turning point for rural healthcare delivery. This initiative is a collaboration between Davis & Shirtliff, Huawei, The Maa Trust, and Saruni Basecamp Foundation. According to Davis & Shirtliff’s Managing Director, the project harnesses Kenya’s abundant solar resources to power vital infrastructure, reducing reliance on costly and unreliable diesel generators. Additionally, Crystal Mogensen of The Maa Trust emphasized that the upgrade will enable the health centre to advance from a Level 3B to a Level 4 facility status.

Statistics & Insights: The upgrade, 50% funded by Saruni Basecamp Foundation, now powers essential medical equipment, refrigeration, lighting, and critical services, benefiting tens of thousands in the region. The solar system is expected to eliminate costs exceeding KSh 300,000 per month on diesel fuel and has already stabilized the power supply, addressing the challenges of frequent electricity disruptions.

Future Implications: This project could enhance maternal and child health outcomes in Narok, where Kenya’s under-five mortality rate stands at 34.8 per 1,000 and maternal mortality at 342 per 100,000. The upgrade is also poised to support Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage goals and Sustainable Development Goal 3, significantly improving patient care by 2030.
