Ndalamo Energy Advances 66MW Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Ndalamo Energy, a subsidiary of South Africa’s Ndalamo Resources, has completed a pre-feasibility study confirming the Wonderfontein Colliery as the site for its new 66 MW solar PV project. Formerly owned by Umsimbithi Mining and Glencore, Wonderfontein was recently acquired by Ndalamo. The solar initiative will be executed in two phases, beginning with a 10 MW system to support internal mining operations, followed by a 56 MW expansion for broader commercial supply through its TradingCo subsidiary. Ndalamo, previously active mainly in joint ventures, is now building direct energy capacity to align with sustainability and operational flexibility goals.
Statistics & Insights: The project spans 136 hectares, with infrastructure upgrades including a 6.6 kV substation and a 22 kV line to distribute power across Ndalamo’s sites in Mpumalanga Province. Facilities such as the North Block Complex and New Clydesdale Colliery are expected to benefit from the expanded power network.
Future Implications: If development proceeds on schedule, the Wonderfontein solar plant could enable Ndalamo to significantly cut operational energy costs and drive its broader clean energy strategy by 2026. Successful implementation could also strengthen energy resilience across its mining portfolio and open new trading opportunities within South Africa’s private energy market.
