Nigeria Launches 2MW Solar Program

Key Figures & Findings: The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has launched the Renewed Hope Solarization Project, a nationwide initiative to deploy 2MW renewable energy systems to all 37 federal universities and 37 tertiary hospitals across Nigeria. Spearheaded by ECN Director General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the project aims to ensure a consistent power supply for academic institutions and healthcare facilities, reinforcing national energy resilience. In total, 74 public institutions are expected to benefit, representing a significant expansion of clean energy infrastructure in the country.
Statistics & Insights: The project will result in 148MW of combined solar capacity (2MW x 74 institutions), making it one of the most extensive public-sector solar initiatives in West Africa.
Future Implications: With Nigeria’s current electrification challenges, this effort is projected to improve operational efficiency in universities and hospitals while lowering dependence on diesel generators. Additionally, it complements ongoing federal investments such as the ₦10 billion solar electrification of the Presidential Villa, designed to model high-impact government adoption of renewable power.
