Nigeria REA, Oando Partner on 1.2GW Solar

Key Figures & Findings: Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has partnered with Oando Clean Energy to establish a 1.2GW solar module assembly facility, marking a significant step in the country’s push for local solar manufacturing. Funded under the World Bank-backed US$750 million Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) program, the project is designed to enhance domestic production, reduce reliance on imports, and drive Nigeria’s energy transition. The first 600MW production line is set to roll out next year. The facility will also feature a solar panel recycling unit, making it one of the few integrated solar manufacturing hubs in Africa.

Statistics & Insights: Nigeria currently generates only a fraction of its energy needs from solar, despite having some of the best solar resources in the world. The Global Solar Council estimates that solar PV meets just 3% of Africa’s total electricity demand, highlighting the need for localized production. Additionally, REA has announced plans to partner with Infracorp and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated to develop an additional 1GW solar module assembly plant.

Future Implications: If successfully implemented, this initiative could set a precedent for large-scale private-public partnerships in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. It may also drive further investments in clean energy infrastructure, reducing reliance on diesel generators and expanding off-grid solutions.
