Nigeria’s Kainji Plant Gets 80MW Boost

Key Figures & Findings: Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited has completed the rehabilitation and synchronization of Unit 1G9 at the Kainji Hydropower Plant in Nigeria, restoring 80MW to the national grid. The company, which manages both the Kainji and Jebba hydropower stations under Nigeria's power sector privatization scheme, completed the project ahead of schedule. CEO Engr. Lamu Audu confirmed the two-year project involved major component replacement, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and the deployment of modern control systems.

Statistics & Insights: The rehabilitation has increased Kainji’s installed capacity from 520MW to 600MW, a 15% boost in generation potential. Mainstream's capacity recovery strategy continues to play a critical role in stabilizing Nigeria’s struggling power infrastructure.

Future Implications: If transmission and distribution are efficiently managed, the added capacity could help reduce load shedding and support industrial growth in Nigeria. If the impact on grid performance proves sustainable, Mainstream may consider rehabilitating additional units by 2026.
