Nigeria's Solar Mini-Grids Power GEAPP Expansion
Key Figures & Findings: The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), backed by the Rockefeller Foundation, Bezos Earth Fund, and Ikea Foundation, invests in Nigeria’s energy sector through solar mini-grids. The pilot grid launched in 2021, and GEAPP is constructing two more with funding for a fourth. Muhammad Wakil, GEAPP’s country lead, emphasizes that hundreds of these projects are essential for ending Nigeria’s energy poverty.
Statistics & Insights: Nigeria’s national grid supplies just 4,000 MW for 230 million people. The DART program helps developers afford solar equipment with a USD 25M facility.
Future Implications: With a USD 130M pledge from the World Bank, GEAPP's model could bring sustainable electricity to millions and reduce fossil fuel reliance.
