Nigeria Scales Up Renewable Energy

Key Figures & Findings: Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has partnered with nine Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) to expand energy access. This initiative aims to power over 100,000 underserved households using modular mesh-grid technology, improving last-mile electrification. The agreement, formalized in Abuja, highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to sustainable energy and energy security at both federal and state levels. The project falls under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) program, designed to accelerate Nigeria’s renewable energy transition.

Statistics & Insights: The project will generate 948 MW from renewable sources and provide 98%+ uptime for productive-use applications such as water pumping, refrigeration, and small-scale milling.

Future Implications: If successful, the initiative could significantly boost energy security, enhance economic productivity, and improve the quality of life for rural communities, reducing Nigeria’s dependence on traditional grid expansion.
