Nordex Casts Keystones for Wind Project

Key Figures & Findings: In a strategic move to support South Africa’s renewable energy goals, Nordex, a European manufacturer of wind turbines, specializing in the design, production, and servicing of onshore wind energy systems and a global leader in wind energy solutions, is manufacturing 1,425 specialized keystones for a wind farm cluster near Impofu Dam in the Eastern Cape. These keystones are being cast at a custom-built factory 52 kilometers from the project site. David Moncasi Hortet, Head of Sales for Africa at Nordex Energy South Africa, highlighted the facility’s utilizes domestically sourced materials, including steel rebar and concrete. This project underscores Nordex’s commitment to regional economic growth while contributing to South Africa’s clean energy infrastructure.

Statistics & Insights: Each wind turbine tower will be built with 25 keystones weighing over 57 tonnes. To facilitate the movement of these massive components, police escorts are planned to transport 13 keystones per tower, streamlining their journey to the construction site.

Future Implications: If the project stays on course, Nordex’s approach could be a model for expanding renewable energy in South Africa, with additional impact anticipated by 2025
