PowerGen, AfDB Launch 120MW Platform

Key Figures & Findings: PowerGen Renewable Energy, in partnership with the African Development Bank’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), PIDG’s InfraCo, IFU, and EDFI ElectriFi, has launched a distributed renewable energy platform to deploy 120 MW of solar and battery storage across Africa. Initial rollouts will take place in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, targeting underserved communities. AfDB’s Daniel Schroth highlighted that the project reflects a wider strategy to leverage private investment for clean infrastructure.

Statistics & Insights: The platform is expected to supply electricity to 68,000 households and 7,000 businesses, addressing part of the 570 million people in sub-Saharan Africa without access to electricity. The initiative builds on PowerGen’s 13 years of experience and its pipeline of mini-grids and C&I projects.

Future Implications: By 2030, the program could enhance grid stability, generate indirect jobs, and increase industrial productivity across multiple African markets, thereby reinforcing regional energy transition goals.

Quick Take: A 120 MW clean power push is underway — but can this platform bridge Africa’s vast energy gap, where 570 million still wait for electricity?
