PowerGen Expands Renewable Energy Across Africa

Key Figures & Findings: PowerGen Renewable Energy, a Nairobi-based microgrid company, has secured investments to roll out 120 MW of off-grid renewable energy systems in Africa. Collaborating with the Private Infrastructure Development Group, Denmark’s Investment Fund for Developing Countries, and EDFI Management Co., the initiative focuses on addressing Africa’s energy gap, starting in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. PowerGen aims to provide clean energy to underserved regions while supporting commercial and industrial energy needs, including battery storage solutions.

Statistics & Insights: This project will deliver energy access to more than 68,000 households and lower electricity costs for 7,000 businesses. Initial financing will catalyze further investments this year to scale the deployment.

Future Implications: If successful, this initiative could significantly reduce energy poverty across sub-Saharan Africa by expanding access to affordable, sustainable electricity. It may also inspire further private-sector investment in renewable energy infrastructure on the continent.
