PPC, Yellow Door Ink Solar Deal

Key Figures & Findings: PPC Ltd, one of Southern Africa’s leading cement producers, has signed a 20 MWac solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Yellow Door Energy (YDE), a Dubai-headquartered independent power producer with growing operations in Africa. Under this 24.5 MWp agreement, YDE will supply renewable electricity via the Eskom grid to four PPC production sites across three provinces: North West, Limpopo, and Western Cape. The solar wheeling model allows PPC to decarbonize its operations without physical solar installations on-site, while Yellow Door Energy—responsible for financing, designing, building, and operating the solar park—continues to deepen its footprint in South Africa’s industrial clean energy sector. “This deal is another step towards achieving our strategic objectives,” said PPC COO Ernesto Acosta.
Statistics & Insights: The Leeudoringstad-based Naledi Ya YDE Solar Park will consist of more than 20,000 solar panels and generate 57.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in its first year. This is expected to offset approximately 59,800 metric tons of CO₂ annually—equivalent to removing over 12,500 cars from the road.
Future Implications: If completed on schedule, the project could begin delivering clean energy to PPC’s operations by mid-2025, allowing the cement giant to mitigate load-shedding risks and meet ESG targets more cost-effectively. The model could also catalyze further solar wheeling agreements across South Africa’s energy-hungry industrial sectors over the next two years.
