Ramaphosa Champions Africa’s Renewable Future
Key Figures & Findings: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, unveiled the "Road to Johannesburg" campaign in Rio de Janeiro. This initiative, leveraging South Africa's upcoming G20 presidency in December 2024, aims to address energy inequality and foster renewable energy expansion. Ramaphosa emphasized Africa’s abundant renewable resources, particularly solar and wind while highlighting the critical need for financial and technological investments. He stressed the significance of a just energy transition to protect livelihoods and promote inclusive growth.
Statistics & Insights: currently, only 3% of global renewable energy investments are allocated to Africa. The European Commission aims to significantly increase this by 2030, offering a chance for Africa to grow its clean energy infrastructure and bolster economic and social development.
Future Implications: By the end of 2024, South Africa’s presidency may catalyze greater international commitments, potentially channeling much-needed investments into Africa’s renewable energy infrastructure. Such actions could support energy accessibility while reducing fossil fuel dependence.
