REA Commission 2.5MW NDA Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: The Nigerian government, in collaboration with the World Bank and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), an agency under the Ministry of Power, is responsible for off-grid electrification across Nigeria has commissioned a 2.5MW hybrid solar plant and a 600kW standalone photovoltaic solar system at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. These installations were executed under the Ministry of Power’s Energising Education Programme (EEP) Phase II, aimed at enhancing electricity access for strategic institutions. REA has increasingly focused on education and military infrastructure. Major General Abdul Ibrahim praised the initiative’s impact on NDA’s academic and operational efficiency.

Statistics & Insights: The solar systems are expected to supply continuous power to over 12,368 people, including cadets and staff, with infrastructure that includes 288 solar-powered streetlights across 9km, 7 transformers, and battery backup systems. The project also created 403 jobs and trained 20 female STEM cadets in solar technology.

Future Implications: If expanded, similar hybrid solutions could reduce military institutions’ reliance on fossil fuels and grid instability nationwide. Future developments under the EEP Phase II and the presidential metering initiative could accelerate grid independence by 2027.
