Rwanda, Ignite to Solar-Power 1,000 Schools

Key Figures & Findings: Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure has partnered with Ignite Power, a leading distributed solar company operating across Sub-Saharan Africa, to electrify nearly 1,000 off-grid schools by 2025. This initiative is part of Rwanda’s broader target to achieve universal access to electricity by 2024 and boost digital learning across rural regions. Ignite Power, backed by investors such as Energy Access Ventures and British International Investment, has deployed solar solutions to over two million people since its founding in 2014.
Statistics & Insights: The project will power 955 schools currently without electricity, benefiting an estimated 400,000 students. Solar kits will be installed at a cost significantly lower than extending the national grid, with installations expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Future Implications: If implemented on schedule, the project could drastically reduce energy inequality in Rwanda’s education sector by December 2025. The success may also open doors for similar public-private partnerships in rural electrification across East Africa.
