Rwanda's IZI Secures $200,000 Grant for E-Bus Expansion

Key Figures & Findings: IZI, a Rwandan e-mobility provider focused on transforming public transport through electric buses, has received a RWF 300 million ($200,000) grant from the Rwanda Green Fund to expand its electric bus fleet by deploying five more advanced e-buses in Kigali. These buses, equipped with features like independent driver cabins, LCD dashboards, and flat-floor designs, aim to provide greater comfort and efficiency in public transport. Additionally, IZI is setting up a battery maintenance and repair facility in Kigali to boost Rwanda’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and create a foundation for growth in the country’s e-mobility sector.
Statistics & Insights: Since its launch in April 2024, IZI's initial fleet of five buses has covered 74,000 electric kilometers, transported 250,000 passengers, cut operating costs by 38%, and prevented over 60 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Demand from local transport operators has surged, leading to contracts for over 100 more buses.
Future Implications: By 2025, Rwanda’s EV infrastructure could witness further development with IZI’s training programs, focused on high-voltage systems and battery diagnostics. This expansion could help Rwanda meet its emissions reduction goals and strengthen its role in sustainable transport.
