Scatec Commence 273 MW Solar Operation

Key Figures & Findings: Scatec has begun commercial operation of the Grootfontein solar plant in South Africa, its first project in the Western Cape and the first Round 5 REIPPPP solar project to reach COD. The facility will supply clean power under a 20-year PPA, forming the largest co-located solar PV cluster in the province.

 Statistics & Insights:

  •  Capacity: 273 MW solar power plant.

  • Annual Generation: Expected to generate 700 GWh of clean energy annually.

  • Ownership Structure: Scatec: 51% equity stake, H1 Holdings (local Black Economic Empowerment partner): 46.5%, Grootfontein Local Community Trust: 2.5%.

  • • Project Status: It is the largest co-located solar PV cluster in the Western Cape.

Future Implications: If replicated across other provinces, similar utility-scale projects could ease pressure on South Africa’s grid, stabilise long-term power supply, and strengthen investor confidence in REIPPPP’s next procurement rounds.
