Scatec Launches 60MW Solar Plant in Botswana

Key Figures & Findings: Norwegian renewable energy firm Scatec ASA has commenced commercial operation of Botswana's first 60MW phase of its 120MW Mmadinare solar cluster. The facility operates under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), ensuring long-term revenue. Scatec fully owns the project but aims to bring in equity partners. The second 60MW phase, which reached financial close in December 2024, is currently under construction and expected to be completed by early 2026.
Statistics & Insights: The Mmadinare solar farm will generate approximately 240GWh of electricity annually when fully operational, helping Botswana reduce its dependence on coal, which currently supplies over 90% of the country’s electricity. The project aligns with Botswana’s goal of achieving 15% renewable energy in its national grid by 2030.
Future Implications: Once completed, the 120MW solar plant could help reduce Botswana’s carbon emissions by approximately 200,000 metric tons annually. This initiative may also attract further investments in renewable energy, accelerating the country’s transition to a more sustainable energy mix.
