SEFA Unlocks $6.3M for Africa’s
Key Figures & Findings: The Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), an initiative backed by the African Development Bank, has approved a $6.3 million technical assistance grant to drive private-sector investment in Africa’s transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure. The grant will support the preparation and transaction advisory for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects that integrate renewable energy and improve energy access across the continent. This effort is aligned with the broader Green Infrastructure for Africa (AGIA) platform and the Mission 300 Initiative, which aims to dismantle market barriers limiting energy access and seeks to catalyze resilient, climate-smart infrastructure development.
Statistics & Insights: The grant aims to mobilize at least $600 million in private capital, targeting bankable, environmentally sustainable transmission and distribution (T&D) projects. SEFA’s support will prioritize grid expansion to integrate renewables, extend household electrification, and accommodate increased renewable energy generation.
Future Implications: If implemented effectively, this could improve electricity access for millions of African households by 2027, while also scaling grid capacity for renewables.
