Senegal, ASER Begin Solar Rollout

Key Figures & Findings: The Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER) has partnered with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to deliver a new solar electrification initiative. With financial backing of $13 million, the project targets underserved regions in northern and eastern Senegal. ASER is central to the country’s rural energy strategy and is implementing the program in alignment with the national access agenda set by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Statistics & Insights: The initiative is expected to reach over 30,000 people across Matam, Saint-Louis, Louga, Kaffrine, and Tambacounda. It includes both the construction and rehabilitation of solar mini-grids under a $13 million funding framework.
Future Implications: If completed as planned, the initiative could accelerate Senegal’s universal access target by 2029 and influence the structure of future public-private rural electrification efforts. Additionally, results from this rollout may shape donor-backed infrastructure priorities in 2026.
