Sibanye-Stillwater's Castle Wind Farm Milestone

Key Figures & Findings: Sibanye-Stillwater, a multinational mining and metals processing group, has announced that its 89 MW Castle Wind Farm near De Aar in the Northern Cape has commenced commercial operations. This development marks a significant milestone as Castle becomes the largest private off-take wind farm operating in South Africa. Neal Froneman, CEO of Sibanye-Stillwater, stated, "This milestone represents a significant advancement in providing sustainable, lower-cost power and progressing towards our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040."
Statistics & Insights: The Castle Wind Farm is expected to supply 309 GWh of renewable energy annually, accounting for 5.5% of Sibanye-Stillwater's energy demand in South Africa. Additionally, it aims to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 321,000 tons annually, representing 5% of the group's scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Future Implications: If Sibanye-Stillwater delivers the full 740MW portfolio as planned by 2026, it may become one of South Africa’s largest industrial renewable energy self-generators. This would set a precedent for other high-energy users to follow suit amid rising tariffs and tightening emissions targets.
