Sierra Leone Cold Storage Goes Solar

Key Figures & Findings: Aptech Africa an established renewable energy provider with operations across multiple African countries, has completed the installation of an 18.04 kWp solar photovoltaic system with a 63.6 kWh lithium battery bank at a 20 kW cold storage facility in Newton, Freetown, Sierra Leone. This initiative aims to tackle persistent energy reliability issues that have long disrupted essential services, including healthcare and food storage. The system integrates 410 Wp solar modules and Weco lithium storage units to ensure continuous power. Access to reliable electricity remains a key challenge in Sierra Leone, impacting economic growth and public health infrastructure.

Insights: The solar-powered system is expected to benefit over 100 residents, supporting cold storage operations and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions through reduced reliance on conventional power sources.

Future Implications: By 2026, similar projects could enhance electricity access in underserved regions, bolstering resilience in critical sectors and fostering localized energy security. Expansion will depend on supportive policy and investment frameworks.
