Sierra Leone’s 30MW Waste-to-Energy Project

ey Figures & Findings: Sierra Leone is advancing its 30MW waste-to-energy facility in Freetown, to be developed by Infinitum Energy under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA). The project aims to process 365,000 tons of waste annually, converting it into 236.5 GWh of electricity. Climate Fund Manager (CFM) has committed $1.3 million from the EU-backed Climate Investor Two Fund to support early-stage development. This initiative is expected to enhance urban waste management, improve energy access, and drive sustainable economic growth.

Statistics & Insights: The facility will provide electricity to 3 million people and contribute significantly to Sierra Leone’s renewable energy goals. The country, which has an electrification rate below 30%, will benefit from increased grid stability and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

Future Implications: If successful, this project could set a precedent for similar waste-to-energy initiatives across West Africa. The development phase, backed by international climate financing, will play a crucial role in ensuring Sierra Leone's long-term energy sustainability by 2027.
