Solarise Commissions 1.2MW Irrigation Project

Key Figures & Findings: Solarise Africa has commissioned a 1.2 MW solar irrigation system in Plooysburg, Northern Cape, designed to ensure long-term energy resilience for Idstone’s commercial farming operations. Developed through Solarise’s hybrid financing model and aligned with South Africa’s Section 12B tax incentives, the project features two off-grid-capable solar PV systems that support variable speed drive (VSD) pumps. According to Solarise COO and co-founder Sakkie van Wijk, the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to “local resilience and intelligent energy solutions” for Africa’s agribusiness sector.
Statistics & Insights: The project consists of a 444.6 kW solar system with 262 kW of VSD capacity, and a second 786.6 kW system with 448 kW of VSD capacity. Combined, the systems generate 2.3 GWh of clean energy annually, deliver over $1.35 million in savings over their lifespan, and reduce carbon emissions by 2,200 tonnes per year.
Future Implications: If replicated across Southern Africa, solar-powered irrigation models like Idstone’s could significantly reduce diesel reliance and enable agribusinesses to withstand grid volatility. Wider adoption may begin by 2026 as food security and climate resilience become top national priorities.
