Somalia Issues Tender for Solar Project

Key Figures & Findings: Somalia has launched a tender for a 12MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system, integrated with a 36MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to strengthen its electricity grid. The selected contractor will oversee the design, procurement, testing, and commissioning of the facility. Additionally, the project includes the construction of 13.5km of 33kV transmission lines to integrate the system into the national grid, marking a significant step in Somalia’s efforts to modernize its power sector.

Statistics & Insights: Somalia currently has one of the lowest electrification rates in Africa, with only 30% of the population having reliable power. The hybrid system aims to replace expensive fossil fuel-based generation, improve energy reliability, and support economic growth.

Future Implications: If completed by 2026, this project could cut energy costs by up to 50% in some areas, improve access to affordable electricity, and attract further investment in Somalia’s renewable energy sector. Additionally, the storage component ensures 24/7 power availability, reducing reliance on costly fuel imports.
