Sound, Gaia Launch 270MW Morocco Solar

Key Figures & Findings: British developer Sound Energy has entered an exclusive joint venture with Moroccan clean energy firm Gaia Energy to deploy up to 270 MW of solar PV capacity across Morocco. The solar plants will be strategically sited near medium-voltage substations to enable efficient integration into Morocco’s deregulated grid and ensure proximity to demand centers. Both companies see the venture as a step toward Morocco’s national goals of reducing fossil fuel reliance and expanding clean energy infrastructure.

Statistics & Insights: The planned capacity could generate around 550 GWh annually, serving up to 350,000 households and offsetting approximately 430,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year. Feasibility studies are currently underway, with the first sites expected to reach an investment decision by Q2 2026.

Future Implications: If the first 100 MW is operational by late 2027, the project could unlock follow-on investments for full-scale deployment by 2029. It may also support Morocco’s ambition to export green energy into European markets by 2030.
