South Africa Advances with Envision Battery Deal

Key Figures & Findings:
Envision Energy a Chinese renewable energy solutions provider that specializes in the manufacturing of wind turbines and energy management software has secured a contract to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) for EDF Group's Oasis 1 portfolio in South Africa. The Oasis 1 cluster comprises three projects totaling 257MW/1,028MWh of lithium-ion battery storage in the Northern Cape, supported by a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) under South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). These projects aim to address critical grid challenges, alleviate load-shedding, and reduce dependence on coal-fired power.

Statistics & Insights:
The US$372 million Oasis 1 cluster will utilize Envision Energy’s containerized 5MWh battery storage units with advanced 315Ah cells, coupled with SCADA and energy management systems. Scheduled for completion by 2026.

Future Implications:
Once operational, the Oasis 1 projects could transform South Africa’s energy landscape by stabilizing its struggling grid and paving the way for expanded renewable energy integration. This initiative signals a promising shift toward sustainable energy infrastructure in line with global climate targets.
