South Africa Approves Renewable Masterplan

Key Figures & Findings: The South African government has officially approved the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan (SAREM) to accelerate the country's shift towards sustainable energy. Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa emphasized that SAREM is a strategic framework designed to harness South Africa's abundant renewable resources, particularly solar and wind, to drive green industrialization and economic growth. The plan outlines a comprehensive approach to facilitate the inclusive industrialization of the renewable energy and battery storage value chains, supporting job creation and a low-carbon, reliable, and affordable energy supply.

Statistics & Insights: SAREM aims to roll out at least 3 GW of renewable energy projects annually, increasing to 5 GW per year by 2030. The plan also targets creating over 25,000 jobs by the end of the decade through local manufacturing of key components such as solar panels, inverters, wind turbine towers, cables, and batteries.

Future Implications: If successfully implemented, SAREM could significantly enhance South Africa's energy security. The focus on local manufacturing and job creation may also contribute to economic growth and development by 2030.
